Epic Games’ hugely popular battle royale game, Fortnite, has managed to spawn entirely new career paths. People have been able to make money as coaches, for example, teaching people how to become better at the game or just giving them a skilled person to play alongside. But how can the game transform existing industries?
French ad agency Dare.Win is one such company hoping to use Fortnite to fill traditional employment positions. The company is hiring interns for a six-month post at its offices in Paris, France and it has asked candidates to play alongside them in the PS4 version of the game. Dare.Win counts Sony PlayStation and YouTube as two of its clients. Given that Fortnite is massively popular on PS4 and has set YouTube records, it makes sense why employees would need to have some familiarity with the game.
Thomas Brouchon, an agent for Dare.Win says that it’s not really about a candidate’s proficiency with Fortnite. Brouchon explains that “We’re not pro players ourselves. The way someone plays can say a lot about their personality, especially about decision-making and how they deal with problems.”
For example, how does the candidate respond if they find themselves being eliminated by using a particularly cheesy strategy? How good is the candidate at communicating with teammates and figuring out the best way to approach a rival group of players?
These skills translate directly into the workplace. A toxic teammate is going to be a toxic employee, and a company wouldn’t want to hire someone if it seems that they cannot work well with others under pressure. Moreover, even if the candidate isn’t very good at Fortnite, if they remain committed to becoming better at the game, that speaks to how they may overcome problems in the workplace.
While this is a less than traditional method of applying for a job, Dare.Win does seem to have found some success with its unorthodox method so far. The company confirms that it has played alongside applicants from Turkey, Sweden, Mexico, suggesting that the game has been successful when it comes to encouraging international candidates, too. So while most Fortnite players will be aiming to go pro or to become popular streamers like Ninja, many will be glad to know that their interest in the game can prove beneficial to their careers in other ways, too.
Fortnite is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and iOS. An Android beta is currently taking place.
