Since its announcement a few years ago, Overkill Software has been mostly quiet about The Walking Dead project it’s had in development. Now the game seems to be nearing completion, as the studio recently released a brand new trailer focusing on the character Aidan that reaffirms its fall 2018 release window. Besides the new trailer, Overkill has also released a short video introducing fans to some key members of the development team, and lets slip some details about the game in the process.
One of the most interesting things we learn from the video is that Overkill’s The Walking Dead will have four player co-op. Players will have multiple characters and classes to choose from, each with their own skill trees and unique abilities. While we’ve known for some time that the game would have co-op play, this appears to be the first confirmation that it will be for up to four players and include RPG elements.
The Walking Dead players will be able to join up with their friends to play through the game’s dedicated story campaign. The existence of a story campaign is another detail that hasn’t necessarily been advertised by Overkill Software since the game’s announcement, and it will be interesting to learn more about what the story has in store for fans.
Based on Aidan’s character trailer, it seems like the story in the often delayed The Walking Dead game will be set near the beginning of the zombie outbreak. The trailer shows Aidan in Washington D.C. as a normal businessman one moment, and the next prowling the streets with a baseball bat, killing zombies as he goes. In the show and comics, many survivors tend to abandon the bigger cities before too long, so it would make sense if the outbreak is still in its early stages.
Then again, Washington D.C. does look especially decrepit in Aidan’s trailer, with destroyed cars littering the road and debris lining the streets. There’s also a relatively low number of zombies that Aidan encounters in the trailer, which is odd considering he’s in a more highly populated area. This could suggest that the game doesn’t take place near the beginning of the outbreak, but a few months or even years into the ordeal.
We won’t learn more concrete details on Overkill’s The Walking Dead until the studio itself decides to divulge more information. Here’s hoping more information on Overkill’s upcoming first-person shooter comes sooner rather than later.
Overkill’s The Walking Dead will launch in fall 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
