Nintendo Labels Mario a Plumber Again

If there’s one thing that should always be true about the Nintendo universe, it’s that the flagship hero, Mario, is a plumber by day and everything else in his off hours. That constant truth was called into question a few months ago when Nintendo suggested Mario moved on from his plumbing days long ago, but it sounds like the company may now be ready to set the record straight.

The quote that called Mario’s primary occupation into question was released in September and read, “”All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago…”

As you might expect, the gaming community immediately started going crazy and demanded to know when Mario stopped being a plumber and what his new primary occupation actually was.

Now, almost half a year later, Nintendo has updated Mario’s description on the Japanese website and added an important addendum…

“… his occupation is plumber. However, his activity is not confined to that area.”

Clearly Nintendo is dancing around the issue a bit, but it seems like it might be enough to calm the fans who were upset.

It’s a bit of a silly piece of drama, but the plumber loyalists seem to be satisfied with this compromise. Nintendo isn’t ready to commit to a confirmation that Mario is out snaking drains and unclogging toilets throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, but they will allow gamers to believe he still lists his occupation as plumber, regardless of how much time he actually spends out on jobs.

Super Mario Galaxy is available now on Nintendo Switch.
