This week, Rockstar Games released a new trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 that gave players their first solid look at the story. Among other things, the trailer introduced players to the various members of Dutch Van der Linde’s gang, while also highlighting some of the exciting action sequences that will be featured in the game.
But one element that stood out to us was how impressive Red Dead Redemption 2 looks, graphically and creatively. Rockstar Games has always been known to push the envelope in its open world games, but RDR 2 looks to be a major step forward.
To help reaffirm that point, Rockstar has released some new screenshots for Red Dead Redemption 2 that are nothing short of stunning. Most impressive is the way the game plays with light sources, creating tons of detail amidst stark shadow.
The screenshots include a good mix of what we assume are intense action sequences as well as some quieter moments between main character Arthur Morgan and the various characters he will meet along the way. Based on hands-off previews of Red Dead Redemption 2, we know that the Van der Linde gang’s well-being will play into the gameplay of the title, as players choose how to interact with each member and help keep them happy with food.
Apparently, Red Dead Redemption 2 will offer players a lot of choice in how they approach missions, and those choices will dictate how the gang reacts to Arthur and in missions with him. For example, players can choose to hunt for the purposes of bringing back food for the gang, or sell the animal trophies in exchange for some extra spending money.
Perhaps the most exciting of the screenshots is one featuring a younger John Marston. When Red Dead Redemption 2 was first announced there was tons of speculation over whether or not Marston would be featured in the game, but once the setting and time period were confirmed it seemed a lock that the character would make an appearance. Based on the new trailer it appears fans may get to see how John Marston got his signature scars, as one scene features the character with the wounds fresh on his face and this screenshot features fully healed scars.
With the new trailer, new gameplay details, and now these screenshots, fans have their best idea as to what to expect from Red Dead Redemption 2 come fall. All that’s left to do is wait.
Red Dead Redemption 2 releases October 26, 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One.
