You may have heard that Avengers: Infinity War is the most ambitious crossover of all time, but it seems that sticking to its own franchises simply wasn’t enough for Marvel. Fortnite has teased on Twitter that a mashup with Infinity War will be starting tomorrow on all platforms.
With Fortnite and Infinity War both comfortably dominating in their respective entertainment industries, a crossover like this will be a match made in heaven for movie fans and gamers alike. Throw in Fortnite’s current superhero theme for Season 4, and the crossover which may immediately come across as surprising actually begins to make a lot of sense.
The mashup will take the form of a Limited Time Mode called Infinity Gauntlet. The game will reportedly function as normal except for one key difference: the Infinity Gauntlet – an extremely powerful alien artifact wielded by Thanos in Marvel’s latest movie – will be in play somewhere in the map. The player that finds and equips this Gauntlet will reportedly transform into Thanos himself.

While details on what exact powers the Gauntlet will bestow upon its wielder are currently unknown, the implications are exciting. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Epic Games’ worldwide creative director Donald Mustard spoke of how both parties wanted the crossover to “be super authentic to both Fortnite and to Avengers: Infinity War.” This seems to hint that effort has been put into the gameplay experience, meaning whatever functionality the Gauntlet has, it’s unlikely that it will feel unbalanced or simply bolted-on to a regular match.
This will mark the first time a new weapon or item has been the focus of an LTM on Fornite. Variants like Solid Gold and High Explosives played with the weapon pool, 50vs50 played with spawning and team mechanics, but we have yet to see a game mode quite like Infinity Gauntlet. Depending on how well the new mode is received by players, this may open the door to a whole new world of possibilities for game modes moving forward.
This is also the first big crossover Fortnite has ever seen, so this may be another indicator for the game’s future. Marketing your product in the biggest video game in the world right now makes a lot of sense from a business standpoint, so players might expect to see more such crossovers – whether these come in the form of more game modes, or even emotes and skins.
Fortnite is available now in early access for iOS, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
