Ditto hasn’t been very important to the Pokemon GO metagame, so after collecting one for the Pokedex entry, most players have stopped caring about the sneaky creature. That all changed when tracking down Ditto’s became both a part of Field Research tasks and a mandatory step on the Special Research journey to catching Mew in Pokemon GO.
Many Pokemon GO players have been stuck on the Catch a Ditto step of the Special Research journey for weeks. Ditto is usually hidden as a Pidgey or a few other common pokemon and only reveals its true form after it is captured. Much to the community’s surprise, it seems like Ditto is now also disguising itself as a Battle Showdown event pokemon.
Starting this morning, many players on Reddit began reporting that they had caught Dittos disguised as Mankey. At first a lot of players thought this was a prank or a hoax, but enough video evidence has now arrived to seemingly confirm the reports.
It’s unclear whether Ditto is now always going to have a chance to spawn as a Mankey or if it is only going to happen during the remainder of the Battle Showdown event. Either way, players who are currently stuck on their Special Research should be sure not to ignore any Mankey spawns while they are out and hunting for a Ditto.
Pokemon GO players are currently scouring the game code to see if any other spawn tweaks came along with this morning’s change. We’ll report back if they find anything interesting.
Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
