Although Fortnite‘s Avengers: Infinity War mode ends today, players will not have to wait long for the Battle Royale mode’s next big addition. In the game’s news tab, Epic Games has teased a new weapon: a Burst Assault Rifle.
The addition of the Burst Assault Rifle will mark the first new balistic weapon added to Fortnite Battle Royale since the Light Machine Gun, which boasted a much higher fire rate and ammo capacity than the current Assault Rifles, at the cost of range and accuracy. While it has been weeks since this addition, Epic Games ensures players never go too long without new content, and so since then we have seen the destruction of Dusty Depot, and even the addition of anti-gravity consumables.
Currently, the only official information we have about the Burst Assault Rifle is that it will come in both Epic and Legendary rarities – this seems to follow the example of the silenced pistols and heavy shotguns, which were two similarly enhanced versions of weapons already in the game.
However, the Fortnite Tracker app seems to already list the damage numbers for the Burst Assault Rifle, showing the Epic variant to do 32 and 64 damage per bullet to the body and head respectively, and the Legendary variant to do 33 and 66 damage per bullet. If correct this would put the damage per bullet ever-so-slightly below the current Epic and Legendary Assault Rifles – though the three-burst nature of the new weapons will undoubtedly provide an increase to to damage per second.
As with every new addition to Fortnite‘s arsenal of weapons, the question arises of which (if any) weapon will be sent to the Vault to make room. Sometimes, weapons are added with none taken out, which may be the case with the Burst Assault Rifle, owing to the fact that the Season 4 update vaulted the crossbows without adding in any new weapons.
While every new weapon has the potential to become a staple of the meta-game, this potential seems especially great with the Burst Assault Rifle, given that the current Burst Rifles are already considered powerful even though they only come in the three lowest rarities. It will be very interesting to see whether the new addition will even become more desirable than the beloved SCAR rifles, which have comfortably reigned over all weapons since Fortnite’s release.
Fortnite Battle Royale is free to play now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Mobile.
