Not too long ago, Bluehole Studio opened a round of testing on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds‘ new island map known as Sanhok, with PC fans who own the battle royale title having been given a chance to try the fresh locale out before it goes live in the actual game. While the developer continues refine the new map and add more details with each test period, the most recent trial saw players finding mysterious golden chests taking up space in various locations around the island.
As seen in the image below courtesy of the Redditor known as FastClicker1, the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds fan discovered one of the golden chests on Sanhok in an alcove of a giant rock formation while headed northeast on the game’s map away from Bootcamp Alpha. Interestingly enough, it looks as if there is currently no way for players to actually interact with the object, with many speculating that they could just be an Easter egg for the time being.
If PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds‘ golden chests on Sanhok are just meant to be a fun little secret for fans to find, then they might be serving as a nod to the discoverable treasure chests on the map in Fortnite Battle Royale that grant various weapons, items, and loot. Should that be the case, then perhaps Bluehole Studio is letting bygones be bygones after lobbing criticism at Epic Games for deciding to offer a title with 100 player PvP gameplay so similar to that of PUBG.
Of course, with PlayerUnknown’s Batttlegrounds‘ Sanhok still being in development, it’s quite possible that Bluehole Studio is intending to use the golden chests to replicate the way in which Fortnite uses them in-game. After all, the PUBG developer doesn’t seem to be too shy about borrowing ideas from Epic Games’ free-to-play title now that the two are major competitors, as Bluehole added an Event Mode just a couple of months ago.
All things considered, we will simply have to wait and see what PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has planned for Sanhok’s golden chests. For now, it looks as if they will simply serve as unofficial map markers for fans to marvel at.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available now for Android, iOS, PC, and Xbox One.
