Fortnite Finally Adding Jetpacks in Limited Time Mode

It seems Fortnite is finally ready to add its long-promised jetpacks to the Battle Royale mode. A quick perusal of the game files has revealed a week 5 challenge that requires players to use the jetpack, which suggests the item could be added to the game as soon as next week.

While digging through the latest Fortnite game files, FNBRLeaks found a week 5 entry that outlines a quest objective called, “Use a jetpack.” Additionally, the files hint at a mode focused specifically on jetpacks and shotguns called “Close Encounters.”

Given that information, it’s possible that the jetpacks will be unique to the Close Encounters mode and won’t be a part of the traditional Fortnite Battle Royale experience. Like Thanos in the Infinity Gauntlet mode, this could be a chance for Epic Games to give players something different to experience, without upsetting the balance in the main game.

Some may remember that Fortnite promised to add jetpacks a few months ago, but internal testing of the item showed some issues. Developer Epic Games did not say exactly what those problems were, but some speculated that the jetpacks interfered with the game’s draw distance and put significant strain on consoles and lower end PCs.

After a while and no jetpack mention from Epic Games, it seemed as though the jetpacks had been shelved for good. Although Fortnite has plenty of goofy weapons and consumables, Epic Games is careful about trying to make sure the Battle Royale mode is balanced and it runs well. If anything should threaten that balance, then the developer will make a change. Just look at how quickly Fortnite removed the guided missile launcher, which many deemed to be too overpowered and difficult to counter.

As of now, the jetpacks are only a part of the game files, and those can easily change from one update to the next. Most figure that Epic Games is going to add the item into the game at some point, and now seems as good a time as any. It’s also really smart of Epic to find a mode that indulges in the shotgun-heavy meta of Fortnite by letting players rush each other with jetpacks. No doubt the Close Encounters mode will lead to plenty of crazy kills.

Fortnite is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
