Telltale has made it official, Batman: The Enemy Within is officially planned
Telltale has made it official, Batman: The Enemy Within is officially plannedto launch later this year. While the second season of Telltale’s take on Batman unfortunately had its surprise ruined due to a leak yesterday, that likely won’t slow fans’ excitement for the new season. Once again, the season will be five episodes total. The first Batman: The Enemy Within episode is scheduled to go live on August 8 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, with iOS and Android devices to follow later this year.
Batman: The Enemy Within, like Telltale’s other season-based games, will pick up right where the action ended in the first season. Batman and Bruce Wayne continue to wrestle with problems unique to each person of the same man, problems that may be more intertwined than they seem. Here’s a brief summary of the upcoming season of Batman provided by Telltale:
“In this latest chapter, both Bruce Wayne and Batman will be forced into precarious new roles. The Riddler has returned to terrorize Gotham City, but his gruesome puzzles merely foreshadow an even greater crisis. With the arrival of a ruthless federal agent and the return of a still nascent Joker, Batman must navigate uneasy alliances while Bruce Wayne undertakes a perilous series of deceptions. Which of Batman’s new allies will you choose to trust? And how deep into the darkness will you let Bruce descend?”
In Telltale’s Batman, players take on the role of both Batman and Bruce Wayne, though both may as well be considered Batman by the standards we know him. It’s Batman‘s dual perspective that allows the adventure game to stay unique, and also avoid the perpetual action typical of other Batman games.
The new season of Batman was just one of three Telltale titles announced today as part of its lead-up to the San Diego Comic Convention. In addition to Batman, Telltale revealed plans for The Walking Dead‘s final season, the conclusion of Clementine’s story, and a second season for The Wolf Among Us, a surprise to be sure. Yet Batman‘s the only one of the new announcements on track for a 2017 date, along with the mid-season Guardians of the Galaxy and Minecraft: Story Mode.
Batman: The Enemy Within will be launching almost exactly one year after Batman’s first season, implying an amount of dedication to the property that Telltale doesn’t show just any every game it makes. It also implies that Telltale’s interested in sticking with Batman as long as fans (and DC’s license) are interested in it. With such a unique take on Batman, Telltale almost certainly has a direction in mind. When they’re describing the Joker as “nascent” you know there’s a lot more Batman to come – if things work out that way.
For now, let’s enjoy this fresh take on Batman for what it is. Telltale must be absolutely gleeful getting to add its own spin to the origins of the Joker, the Riddler, and whoever else is lying in wait to surprise the Bat in this second season.
Batman: The Enemy Within launches its first episode, The Enigma, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC starting August 8. iOS and Android devices will receive support later this year.
