Destiny 2 Faction Emotes Locked Behind Microtransaction

Destiny 2 Faction Emotes Locked Behind Microtransaction

Last week, Bungie drew a lot of criticism for the Iron Banner bundle that was added to Destiny 2 alongside the first iteration of the popular Crucible mode for Season 3. The bundle was sold for 1100 Silver (about $10) and included, among other things, an Iron Banner emote that was exclusive to the bundle.

Locking an emote connected to a free Destiny 2 event was anything but a smart move for Bungie and it led to a lot of criticism online. But it appears the developer has not learned from that criticism, as a set of Faction Rally themed bundles are apparently on the way.

Alongside this week’s Destiny 2 update, which added support for the new Crucible Labs test mode, Bungie released the backbone of its upcoming Faction Rally event. The improvements included a new system called Renown, a new setup for Faction vendors, and a restriction to one Faction pledge per account. It also added new Faction Rally bundles to the Eververse store.

While these Faction Rally bundles have yet to go live, they are in the database already. As soon as the event starts on Tuesday, June 5th, players will likely see the bundles and a new series of forum and Reddit posts will surface.

The discussion around Eververse and emotes is an ongoing one and to Bungie’s credit, the developer has taken strides to make cosmetic items like shaders, ships, and emotes accessible simply by playing the game. The new Prismatic Matrix setup allows players to roll the dice on a smaller pool of items, and unlocking Prototype Engrams is relatively fast.

At the same time, however, Bungie has also added these emote bundles which, while a direct purchase, are tied to events that all players have access to. It seems odd that these emotes wouldn’t come directly from the events they are tied to. For example, there are some Leviathan raid emotes that can only be earned from the raid encounters, and yet the Iron Banner emote must be purchased for $10.

With the Destiny 2 Year 2 reveal only a few days away, it will be interesting to see if Bungie addresses cosmetics and microtransactions. Even if they don’t, a price tag mention could elicit some strong responses based on the perceived breadth of the content. Good thing the reveal stream goes live before Faction Rally does, as Twitch chat would likely be filled with some strong voices.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
