A decade ago, it seemed like no game could possibly top the pop culture relevance of Minecraft, but Fortnite is really giving those building blocks a run for their money. From Fortnite inspired taunts at sporting events to massive eSports prizes, the battle royale game is really taking over the world. The game’s cultural relevance is even invading BBC’s 500 Words competition.
The BBC 500 Words short story competition tasks children from ages five to 13 years old with writing a short story. The 134,790 stories that were submitted this year have been analyzed and, although plastic and recycling were the most popular topics mentioned, Fortnite still showed up in great frequency.
Fortnite was nestled right in with unicorns and slime among the most popular words in the essays. According to the BBC data, the use of the word “game” increased by 66% in the 2018 competition, up from 17,000 to 30,000 mentions.
It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Fortnite wasn’t the only gaming-related word to make an appearance on the list. In addition, console and noob were also highlights of the stories. Some of the stories apparently focused on addictions to gaming and social media.
As Fortnite’s popularity continues to swell, it seems highly likely that it will continue on its way to becoming a household name on par with Mario or Call of Duty.
