Pokemon GO fans may be busy testing out the Friends and Trading feature, but nobody has forgotten that a new month of Research and rewards is right around the corner. Although the Research Breakthrough hasn’t been confirmed yet, Niantic is busy teasing some of the upcoming content on Twitter.
The last three months of Pokemon GO Research Breakthroughs have each rewarded players with one of the Gen 1 Legendary birds. Niantic hasn’t confirmed what would follow the birds yet, but many players were predicting the Legendary beasts. If a new hint on Twitter is to be believed, that theory may have just been squashed.
Here’s a look at the tweet, and the accompanying Snorlax photo, that has the Pokemon GO fans rethinking their July Breakthrough theories…
Get ready for a new set of Field Research tasks and rewards, Trainers! July research tasks will be featuring some familiar Pokémon originally discovered in the Kanto region. pic.twitter.com/gnPHacmrx4

The tweet doesn’t specifically call out the Research Breakthrough by name, but instead talks about Field Research and rewards. It’s possible that Snorlax could be a reward for one of the more difficult Field Research tasks, but he does seem like a higher value creature than are usually offered for those.
On the other side of the coin, Snorlax also seems a little too low value to be the weekly Research Breakthrough for the month. Players have had lots of opportunities to catch or hatch him since the game launched, so he isn’t quite as exciting as the Legendary Raid bosses.
Niantic hasn’t offered any confirmation at this point, so stay tuned for an update. Within the next few days we should know for sure what the July Research Breakthrough is going to be.
Until then, good luck out there, trainers.
