With the buzz surrounding the Forsaken expansion for Destiny 2 ramping up, it seems Bungie is taking steps to bring lapsed players back into the fold. The game has been enjoying quite a bit of positive speculation in the wake of the wave of details released during E3. It may not be enough to get people to buy back into Destiny 2 in its current state, but it might be enough to drop in for a free look. Those open to such a situation are in luck, as Destiny 2 will be free to play this weekend.
From Friday, June 29 to Sunday, July 1, Destiny 2 will be completely free to play. At the very least, this covers the story content and gear included in the base game and competitive multiplayer. Those that decide they want to continue past the free weekend will have the option of buying the game and expansion pass for a moderate discount, and their character progress will transfer over to the paid version of the game. That progress might not matter so much for those coming back for Forsaken though, since all players of Forsaken will be offered a character boost once they download it.
The announcement doesn’t mention the DLC expansions either way, so there is the possibility that they’re included as well. However, considering that the expansions would require an additional download and character levels higher than what can reasonably be achieved in a single weekend, their inclusion is unlikely. Since Forsaken will be picking up where the campaign’s story left off, having free access to the DLC this weekend might not be all that important anyway.
With Forsaken, Destiny 2 is poised to finally make some significant progress towards digging itself out of the massive hole it fell into at launch. Players both lapsed and completely new are all taking a fresh look at the game, many of whom are just waiting for confirmation the game will finally be what it was promised to be. So far, Forsaken sounds great, and the rumblings about crossplay with Xbox One make it sound even better. If Bungie actually delivers on its promises this time, Destiny 2 might just have a bright future after all.
Destiny 2: Forsaken launches September 4, 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
