Since its debut on the Battle Royale scene, Fortnite has had one thing going for it apart from all other titles in the genre: building. Where other Battle Royale games were focused on tight gunplay or intense PvP showdowns, Fortnite added the element of fort building to create a new dynamic for battles. This week, that dynamic is about to expand thanks to a new item.
In the weekly update teaser for Fortnite Battle Royale, Epic Games reveals that a new Port-a-Fort item is coming to the game’s loot table. As the name suggests, the Port-a-Fort will be a throwable that quickly turns into “a defensive position upon impact.”
Based on that description, it sounds as though the Port-a Fort will give players a quick form of cover any time they need. However, there are a lot of questions as well, like how complex this portable fort will be or what material it will be made out of? Many players can build four walls and a ceiling very quickly thanks to the speed building feature added to Fortnite.
Without seeing it in action, we’d venture to guess that the Port-a-Fort will be useful for players that need protection for a quick heal. Popping a Chug Jug might not be a smart idea in the fort, but perhaps using a few mini shield potions or a large potion will be possible. It ultimately depends on how fortified the structure is.
Either way, we fully expect Fortnite players to use the Port-a-Fort to start and test its true utility online. It’s hard to imagine the more dedicated players carrying the item just for protection from damage and a quick place to heal, but there may be other uses that we haven’t thought of. After all, items like the Boogie Bomb and Impulse Grenade seemed like gimmicks at first, and then hardcore players should that they could be viable weapons in the right hands.
Alongside the new Port-a-Fort, Fortnite is also bringing back the High Explosives Limited Time Mode. The general approach of the mode seems to be the same – every weapon drop is some form of explosive – except the guided missile launcher is now included in the loot table. Given how strong the launcher can be, it would be surprising not to see almost every player using it towards the end of a match. There are also sure to be some players trying to ride the missile as well, so that should be fun.
Fortnite Battle Royale is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
