How to make the most of January’s Community Day.

Spheal is the focus of January 2022’s Community Day – an event which sees the spawn rate of the highlighted Pokémon increase for six full hours.

This event is ideal for both newcomers and experienced players alike, because, not only does it offer you the chance to fill in some Pokédex entries, but you can find a Spheal with 100% perfect IV stats.

It’s also the first of two Community Day events this January, with the second being Bulbasaur’s Community Day Classic on Saturday, 22nd January.

Below you’ll find a preview of shiny Spheal and, for when you find the ideal Spheal, the Spheal evolution chart and Walrein’s best moveset.

Spheal’s 100% perfect IV in Pokémon Go explained

An excellent reason to partake in January’s main Community Day is the chance to catch a perfect Spheal in Pokémon Go.

A Spheal with 100% IV stats can be evolved into Sealeo and, eventually, a powerful Walrein, which is a great choice for battling in raids, gyms and the Go Battle League.

The CP values which correspond to perfect 15/15/15 stats are as follows:

  • Level 30 (wild CP maximum) – 825 CP
  • Level 35 (weather boosted CP maximum) – 893 CP

The wild CP value aligns with your current trainer level until you reach Level 30, so, since the majority of the player base is above this level, we kept to these values for simplicity’s sake. If, however, you’re currently below Level 30, these values will be different.

Spheal evolution chart: What does Spheal evolve into?

Spheal has two evolutions – Sealeo and Walrein – which require 25 Candies and 100 Candies in turn.

Throughout Community Day – running from 11am to 5pm (local time) – you’ll have ample time to collect Spheal Candy for both evolving this Pokémon, teaching it new moves and powering it up.

You can also use a number of methods to boost the amount of Candy you earn:

  • Using a Pinap Berry will double the amount of Candy you receive from 3 to 6.
  • Evolving a water or ice-type Mega Evolution – such as Mega Blastoise or Mega Abomasnow – during the event grants an extra 1 Candy per catch.

These methods are especially useful if you can only play for a small part of Community Day, but still want to evolve or power up Spheal.

Before evolving Spheal, remember to check their IV stats or simply search 3* and 4* to see which ones are worth investing in. Walrein’s exclusive moves – Powder Snow (Fast) and Icicle Spear (Charged) – will also be available till 7pm (local time) on Community Day. If you miss the moves, you’ll need to either use an Elite TM or wait till the December Community Day.

What, however, is the best moveset for Walrein?

Walrein moves and best moveset recommendation explained

We recommend a moveset of Waterfall (Fast), with Blizzard and Earthquake (Charged) for Walrein in Pokémon Go.

While it might seem odd to ignore both of the exclusive moves, it’s important to note that Powder Snow provides less damage per second compared to Waterfall. When it comes to Charged moves, Blizzard has a base power of 130 which is far higher than Icicle Spear’s 60. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experiment with the new moves to see if you prefer them, but you may end up with a weaker Walrein as a result.

Either way, we do highly recommend taking advantage of Walrein’s varied moveset so it knows a water, ice and ground-type move. Doing so will allow you to adapt quickly in battle, especially if you’re unable to switch Walrein out at the time.

The above is, of course, our opinion and Walrein’s full moveset, accessed using Fast and Charged TMs, is as follows:

Fast Attacks:

  • Frost Breath (Ice)
  • Powder Snow (Ice) – Community Day / Elite Fast TM exclusive
  • Waterfall (Water)

Charged Attacks:

  • Blizzard (Ice)
  • Earthquake (Ground)
  • Icicle Spear – Community Day / Elite Charged TM exclusive
  • Water Pulse (Water)

Aside from the chance to create a powerful Walrein, this Community Day is perfect for finding a shiny Spheal…

The Season of Heritage continues in 2022, along with the XP Challenge and a refreshed Go Battle League.

Ongoing are Arlo, Cliff, Sierra counters and Giovanni counters.

The major updates in the previous year include a level cap increase, the introduction of XL Candy, boosts to some XP sources and the addition of Platinum Medals.

What does shiny Spheal, shiny Sealeo and shiny Walrein look like in Pokémon Go?

Finding a shiny form for the highlighted Pokémon is one of the biggest draws for any Community Day.

Coupled with the increased shiny rate for Community Days and how catching Pokémon of the same type naturally increases your chance of encountering shinies, it’s easier to catch a collection of shinies during these events.

When it comes to actually finding a shiny Pokémon, you first need to start a catch encounter with a Pokémon in the wild. You’ll then be able to tell if the Pokémon you’re facing is shiny by its alternative colouring, the sparkles which shine at the start of the encounter and the shiny icon next to its name.

If this is your first time facing the shiny form for a particular Pokémon, we recommend using Golden Razz Berries and Ultra Balls to increase your chances of catching it.

Shiny Spheal is a recent addition to Pokémon Go, being released as part of the Holiday 2021 last month. Since it was released a couple of weeks ago, there’s still a chance you haven’t been able to add it to your collection yet.

If you want to evolve a shiny Spheal, we recommend waiting till the end of the Community Day. This is because you might be lucky enough to catch multiple shiny Spheals and, if so, it’s a good idea to check their IVs.

Doing so will not only give you a shiny Walrein, but a powerful one and, if evolved before the 7pm (local time) on Community Day, it will know the exclusive moves, Powder Snow and Icicle Spear.

Community Day is the perfect opportunity to both find a rare Pokémon and transform it into a powerful fighter. Take the time to carefully pick and choose your Spheals, investing in its moveset, to make the most of this event.
